Reading Passage 1
During the past century, the growth of large cities has transformed the way people move between their homes, workplaces and public spaces.
Early urban transport systems relied heavily on fixed routes and regular schedules. As cities expanded, new technologies created increasingly flexible alternatives.
Researchers now examine not only the speed of transportation but also its environmental impact, accessibility, reliability and effect on the design of urban neighbourhoods.
A particularly important development has been the integration of several transport modes into a single journey. Digital services can now combine walking, rail, buses and shared vehicles in ways that were difficult to coordinate in the past.
However, greater technological sophistication does not automatically lead to more efficient cities. Infrastructure, affordability and public behaviour continue to play an important role.
For this reason, transport planners increasingly evaluate systems as connected networks rather than as isolated services.
Question 1
Urban transport planning now considers more factors than journey speed alone.
